public website home page membership weather links contact members website yorkshire fly-fishers’ club yorkshire fly-fishers’ club was established in 1884 by the eminent angler and writer thomas evan pritt. the original title was the yorkshire anglers association. the standards and principles laid down by the founders continue to be applied in this present day. yffc owns and leases many miles of excellent game fishing on the following rivers; the eden in cumbria the club has several notable beats on the eden in the following locations, wetheral, armathwaite, langwathby, temple sowerby and crackenthorpe, the total fishing available is approximately 18 miles most of which is double bank. the wetheral fishing consists of five miles of double bank fishing on the lower eden and offers some of the rivers best salmon fishing. the beat is limited to twenty-seven rods which fish on a rotation system resulting in a maximum of nine rods fishing on any one day. the middle and upper reaches provide excellent wild brown trout fishing, each season trout of over 3lbs are caught and many above 2lbs. salmon fishing on the middle eden can be rewarding from the summer through to the autumn. the eamont in cumbria the club’s beat is approximately 4 miles of single bank fishing on the lower eamont. much of what has been said of the eden can apply to the eamont; excepting the eamont trout can be a little more challenging. a significant proportion of the eden salmon, including most of the spring stocks run up the eamont and head for ullswater. grayling are present in reasonable numbers in both eden and eamont. the lune in lancashire the club’s beat is approximately 3 miles of mostly double bank fishing on a very scenic part of the lune some 4 miles upstream from kirkby lonsdale. the lune predominantly offers salmon and sea trout fishing; however, it also produces several large wild brown trout each season. the ribble in lancashire the club’s beat is approximately 3 miles of double bank fishing in the sawley to gisburn area, providing good wild brown trout fishing with an average weight of 3/4lbs, however each season fish of over 2lbs are recorded. grayling are also present in good numbers and with suitable water levels salmon are worth pursuing from august to the end of october. in addition the ribble enjoys a decent sea trout run in the summer months. the ure in yorkshire the club’s beat is approximately 2 1/2 miles of single bank fishing upstream of masham. the ure in this area is very scenic and offers good quality trout fishing through the summer and some of the best grayling fishing in the north of england. the 5 year average (2006-2010) on yffc waters is 498 salmon and 70 sea trout of which the vast majority are returned to the river. all the club’s beats have good access and are supported with excellent parking facilities and are generally close to the riverbank. the club employs three keepers who are supported by a number of river watchers, who maintain very high standards and are available to offer advice on the riverbank and/or before one travels. methods and restrictions on all our waters, angling for trout and grayling is limited to artificial fly. no spinning or bait fishing is allowed, however long trotting with the worm is permitted for grayling during the salmon closed season, with the exception of the armathwaite beat. angling for salmon is restricted to fly and spinner - no natural baits are permitted. yffc encourages catch and release but does not insist upon it. in addition to being conservation minded yorkshire fly-fishers’ club has supported a significant habitat improvement program working with the environmental agency, eden trust and ribble trust to improve habitat for both fish and fauna. in recent years we have erected considerable lengths of fencing to create buffer zones along the waters edge. in addition the club has planted thousands of native trees and encouraged bank side vegetation and cover, a policy we shall be continuing with. membership for detail on yffc membership and an application form please refer to the membership page of the website. design by troutfly internet
